This past weekend, officers from the North Vancouver RCMP Traffic unit were out in full force conducting traffic enforcement targeting high risk driving and they were able to catch a learner driver speeding in the Upper Lonsdale area.

In a press release, police said a learner ‘L’ driver was stopped after seen clocking at 199 km/h in a posted 80 km/h zone. The Learner driver was racing on the Upper Levels highway near Lonsdale Ave with another vehicle when the officer stopped him.
When stopped and asked why he was going so fast, the 19-year-old said because the “other driver was going faster”. Officers were unable to stop the second vehicle in question. However, the learner was driving without a supervisor and carrying too many passengers.
A 19-year-old from North Vancouver was issued tickets for Excessive speed, Drive Without Due Care and Attention and Drive Contrary to restrictions. The fines summed up to almost $ 1500. The vehicle was also impounded for seven days. Speed remains as the number one cause of death on our roadways, said Cst. Mansoor Sahak, Media Relations Officer for the North Vancouver RCMP.
“When it comes to speeding and dangerous driving, every death is a preventable death. We are committed more than ever to stopping irresponsible drivers through enforcement and education.”

Agreed.. he could have possibly killed everyone in that car. He was just fortunate that the police was able to intervene. Fines mean nothing to some people. Kudos to the RCMP.
Punishment is too lenient. The teen should be doing community service eg: pick
up garbage from sidewalks and street gutters for 3 months in addition to the fines.
Where is parental control???
Our son knows local kids like this and $1,500 is nothing to them. Pocket change. Bragging rights.
They need to lose the car and their licence for at least a year, and be sentenced to 50 – 100 hours of community work and restorative justice. I suppose a standard fine would help, but it’s the loss of the car that will have the only real impact.
Yes absolutely. Driving is a privilege not a right. Our system is a complete joke.
I should add my appreciation to the police for clocking the driver. I hope we can give the local police more resources to keep our streets safer for everyone.

$1500 is not anywhere near enough in fines.
The car being taken away for seven days is not long enough.
Considering he was a new driver, whatever type of license, he has should be suspended for a minimum of 5 years.
I live in North Van and never use the highway because of idiots like this.
An idea would be that the driver to have to meet with the parents of the others in the car and apologize for driving at a speed that would endanger their lives.
Fines of $1,500 ??? Where is the license suspension (for at least 6 months) – and why is he not named?
